The Horticultural Science Small Fruit Programs are focused on optimizing the production of bunch grapes, muscadines, strawberries, blackberries, raspberries, and blueberries. Breeding programs are active in developing varieties of strawberry, blueberry, muscadine, raspberry, and blackberry adapted to North Carolina. Cultural studies focus on the development of management practices that improve yield and fruit quality. The research and extension information is posted to several commodity specific portals that act as “one-stop shops” for information on a specific crop. The Small Fruit Program’s collaborative effort unites regional growers, grower organizations, and industries through agriculture extension programs and research stations.

Blueberries

The Blueberry portal unifies research information and resources pertaining to the production techniques, management, and marketing of North Carolina blueberries that growers need for success.

Caneberries (Blackberry & Raspberry)

Growers and Extension agents will find information specific to raspberries and blackberries for new and experienced growers. The site feature articles sharing grower experiences, industry representatives, and national research initiatives that include NC State personnel.

Muscadine and Vinifera Grapes

The Muscadine Grape site is developed to centralize the latest information and research for North Carolina growers, addressing production issues, pest management, marketing, and popular cultivars.

Strawberries

The Strawberry Information Portal consolidates knowledge from an interdepartmental, multidisciplinary approach to save growers time and effort seeking strawberry specific research, production, and marketing information.

Small Fruit Breeding

The strawberry and caneberry breeding programs are responsible for the development of new strawberry, raspberry, and blackberry cultivars adapted to North Carolina. The primary focus of the strawberry breeding program is the development of disease-resistant cultivars with superior horticultural traits (high yield, excellent flavor, and good post-harvest qualities). While the caneberry breeding program focuses on the development of raspberry cultivars that are heat tolerant and have a high chilling requirement. The blackberry breeding program focuses on the development of thornless cultivars with superior fruit traits.

Provides innovative research-driven agriculture services to enhance small fruit production resiliency in the Southeast and throughout the US. Proudly serving the strawberry, wine- and fresh market grape industry in North Carolina.

Small Fruit & Specialty Crop IPM

Specialty Crop Entomology Laboratory studies insects and mites that eat what you want to eat and the pollinators that make your food possible. The lab researches strawberry, blackberry, raspberry, blueberry, grape, tobacco, and other specialty crop systems, and projects that address whole farm, single insect species, and even molecular questions.

The Southern Regional Small Fruit Consortium

The Southern Regional Small Fruit Consortium goal is to involve collaborative efforts at various sites across the region between small fruit growers and grower organizations, industries and service organizations allied with and/or serving small fruit growers, agricultural extension programs, and research stations working together to enhance the development of the small fruit industries in the region.
